Throughout the week of Boys State, our delegates are in constant competition. Their successes, whether as individuals or as part of a team, add to the prestige of their City. At the end of the week, the City that has had the most success throughout the week is named the City of Excellence. The award factors in almost every aspect of the Boys State program including success in elections, academic excellence, recreation victories, quality of legislation passed and whether it is approved by the governor and passes Supreme Court review, the ability to maintain a municipal budget, and how they work as a team throughout the week. The competition starts the second our session starts and it is almost always a close race to the finish. This teaches so many valuable lessons, but most importantly, it requires that the delegates find ways to work with each other for the betterment of their City as opposed to focusing solely on personal gain.
