A goal of the Boys State program is for delegates to learn through a simulated experience how the State Government operates. In 2021, we added private enterprise to provide lessons on the business-government relationship. The enterprise we selected was the oil and gas industry. Each City selects an entrepreneurial business leader to run a company that competes with other cities to make the most profit. But their decisions also impact the state at large via tax receipts – similar to the revenue challenges Oklahoma experienced in 2016. The decisions made by both the businesses and the governing officials determine whether the simulated economy at Boys State will flourish or flounder. Will companies flood the market with products that reduce prices and tax receipts? Will the government raise or lower taxes or take a hands off approach to the market? The Boys State delegates will entertain and debate these decisions with many more as part of the government practicum to experience firsthand how the government and markets interface with each other!
